Stop Solar Farm Cable Theft

Solar farms across the UK are increasingly targeted by organised criminals and opportunists, with cable theft causing significant financial and operational damage. When criminals cut and remove string cable or copper earthing, the impact extends far beyond replacement costs—generation stops, infrastructure is damaged, repair lead times stretch out, and insurance claims become complex.

At Panthera, we design and deliver end-to-end solar farm security solutions that combine perimeter protection, intrusion detection, CCTV (including thermal), and 24/7 monitoring—all managed under one provider.

Our layered approach is built to deter, delay, detect and respond to threats before they impact your operations, reducing downtime, protecting your assets, and supporting smoother insurance processes.

Key elements of solar farm security:

Physical Barriers

Anti-climb fencing and secure gates designed to withstand forced entry attempts and create visible deterrence in remote locations.

Early Warning Detection

Intrusion alarms positioned to catch movement during approach—not after equipment has been accessed.

Mobile & Fixed Surveillance

Flexible CCTV deployment combining permanent installation at substations with relocatable towers for construction phases and high-risk periods.

Site-Specific Security Design

Tailored protection strategies based on your site layout, cable routes, access points and local threat assessment.

CCTV: Detection, Deterrence and Documentation

CCTV surveillance plays a dual role in solar farm security—acting as both a powerful visual deterrent and a critical evidence-gathering tool. The visible presence of cameras often redirects criminals to softer targets, while recorded footage provides essential evidence for police investigations, insurance claims and identifying repeat offenders.

Panthera offers a range of CCTV solutions ranging from smaller fixed cameras to CCTV towers. Whether you need temporary coverage during construction, or permanent protection for cable routes, our CCTV systems are designed to detect threats early, capture evidence, and enable a speedy response.

Perimeter Protection: Your First Line of Defence

A robust perimeter delays intrusions and controls who enters your solar farm. Panthera's EnviroFence™ delivers engineered anti-climb fencing in multiple security specifications, while our patent-pending Net Zero EnviroHoard™ system provides additional screening and physical protection. Both work with secure gates and access control systems to create controlled entry points and monitored access.

This layered approach deters opportunist theft and forces organised criminals to spend longer at the perimeter—giving your detection systems time to alert and respond before high-value cabling is reached. Speak with our team today to discuss our sustainable fencing and hoarding options.

Why Single-Provider Security Reduces Risk and Cost

Managing solar farm security through multiple contractors creates gaps that criminals exploit, such as unclear ownership when fences meet gates, delayed responses when alarms and CCTV systems are triggered.

Panthera eliminates these risks by delivering complete security solutions under one roof. This means one point of contact, reduced costs, and ensures all elements of your protection system work together as designed—not as an assembly of disconnected products.

Let's build a greener future together – starting with smarter choices for your solar farm security.

FAQs

Got a Question About Solar Farm Security Solutions?

Why are solar farms being targeted by criminals?

Solar farms are attractive targets for three main reasons: they're located in remote areas with low natural surveillance, they contain high-value copper cabling that's relatively easy to remove, and once criminals learn a site's layout and security weaknesses, repeat attacks become more likely. Recent data shows organised criminal networks are specifically targeting solar installations across the UK.

What's the real cost of cable theft beyond replacement?

Cable theft costs extend far beyond the material value. The bigger expenses include generation downtime while safety checks and rewiring are completed, damage to infrastructure during removal (cut conductors, compromised terminations), access constraints due to weather or ground conditions, specialist labour availability, and complex insurance claims that require proof of adequate security measures.

Can mobile CCTV towers be moved to different locations on site?

Yes. Our RapidFlex Mobile CCTV Towers are designed for rapid deployment and relocation. They're particularly useful during construction phases, when cable routes are being trenched, during maintenance shutdowns, or when threat intelligence suggests specific areas are being targeted. This flexibility allows you to concentrate surveillance where risk is highest at any given time.

How do modern security systems reduce false alarms?

Advanced detection software uses artificial intelligence to distinguish between genuine threats and environmental triggers like wildlife, weather or vegetation movement. Our surveillance cameras can be configured with specific detection zones, excluding areas prone to false triggers while maintaining coverage of critical perimeter security points. When alerts are generated, remote CCTV monitoring teams verify suspicious activity through video surveillance before escalating—dramatically reducing false alarms while ensuring rapid response to actual security breaches.

Do solar farms need security personnel or is remote CCTV monitoring enough?

The right mix depends on your site's risk profile and location. Remote CCTV monitoring with motion detection provides cost-effective 24/7 coverage across large areas, with fast response to suspicious activity. For higher-risk sites or those experiencing repeated criminal activity, we can supplement surveillance systems with security guards or mobile patrols during vulnerable periods. Many operators find that visible CCTV cameras combined with professional monitoring systems deter most threats, reserving security personnel for sites with confirmed targeting or high-value equipment concentrations.

Can security systems be scaled as the solar farm expands?

Yes. Our systems are designed to be scalable and adaptable. Whether you're adding new arrays, expanding perimeters or upgrading from construction-phase security to permanent operational protection, we can integrate additional fencing, cameras and monitoring coverage without replacing existing infrastructure. This phased approach allows you to match security investment to project development stages.Add to Conversation

We’re proud to have worked with some of the biggest names in the construction industry

Since 2015, Durkan have been successfully working with Panthera under a single supplier framework agreement, this alone is testament to their ability and commitment in supporting Durkan through its own growth plans. In this time Panthera have safely installed in the region of over 8000 metres of hoarding across our schemes. Their MD Neal James and his team have always acted professionally and regularly go over and above to support our site teams.

Durkan are committed to driving down the C02 impact of its projects, EnviroHoard™ helps us from the start of the project and now it is Net Zero Verified will only further support our sustainability targets. I look forward to working with them in the future and would recommend their services to other contractors.

Dean Martin

Construction Director, Durkan Ltd

Sisk have been using Panthera across its various Wembley Park regeneration schemes since 2011 and since 2018 a national framework has been in place, during this time they have safely and professionally designed and installed a range of hoarding systems to suit the projects exacting requirements. In line with our own company sustainability strategy, we have been using their sustainable EnviroHoard™ system and have been impressed by its flexibility and in particular its sustainable attributes including its climate positive benefits, Tree Planting and Carbon Offsetting. I have always found them to be an easy and collaborative subcontractor to work with and would have no hesitation in recommending their services.

Panthera are a Tier 1 Subcontractor to Lovell, who deliver in terms of H&S, quality of workmanship and have a pro-active attitude on site. In terms of commercial approach, Panthera are non-contractual and their quotations and valuations are of a very good quality. A major benefit of Panthera is that they can undertake the Site Hoarding, Temporary Electrics & Plumbing and CCTV Security on our project, these are procured under a single contract. Operationally they deliver these packages using their in-house teams and coordinate all packages saving our site teams having to coordinate multiple trades.

Supply Chain Manager, Lovell

EnviroHoard™ not only helps us to meet our ambitious environmental targets, it also has real practical benefits. The panels needed to sit on top of a retaining wall with a 4m drop on one side. As EnviroHoard™ is installed from the rear, it eliminated the need for a partial road closure and the hiring of aerial platforms (MEWPS) which saved traffic disruption and cost and a further benefit was that the works did not have to take place at night.

The hoarding has a clean, professional looking appearance and does not need any on-going decorating maintenance and can be easily dismantled and reinstalled across the project with no loss in its visual appearance or structural integrity.

Matthew Davis

Project Manager, Kier

Firstly, the hoarding system we chose needed to be able to last for the entire project; this is because we made a conscious decision early on that a key driver across the scheme was to look for environmentally friendly alternatives. The EnviroHoard™ solution enabled us to meet that requirement perfectly.

We had been testing the product on simulated sites, but the opportunity to install in a real situation was ideal and has reaffirmed the benefits of the system. When coupled with the benefits of using a closed loop recycled solution that eliminates the use of trees, we believe EnviroHoard™ is the way forward for site hoarding solutions.
