Why Construction Site Security Matters

Construction site security is essential for protecting equipment, materials and personnel while maintaining project timelines and reducing insurance costs. Effective construction site security requires a multi-layered approach that combines different security methods working together. No single solution provides complete protection—successful site security integrates physical barriers like fencing and hoarding with technological systems such as CCTV and access control.

By implementing overlapping security solutions, you deter criminals, detect intrusions early and maintain protection throughout your project.

Methods for securing a construction site:

Perimeter Protection

Fencing and hoarding create the first line of defence, creating clear boundaries that deter unauthorised access and protect your site and the public.

Access Control

Turnstiles and software systems ensure only authorised personnel can enter your site, preventing trespassing while also enabling attendance tracking.

CCTV Monitoring

24/7 surveillance cameras monitor your site, deterring criminal activity while providing clear footage for evidence collection.

Sustainability

Modern security solutions like EnviroHoard™ and EnviroFence™ deliver protection while reducing your project's carbon footprint.

Perimeter Protection: Your First Line of Defence

Strong fencing and hoarding systems establish clear boundaries, prevent unauthorised access and protect both your assets and the public.

Panthera Group's perimeter solutions combine security with sustainability. Our EnviroFence™ is the UK's first net-zero certified temporary fencing, with heights up to 3.6m and designed to resist high winds and pedestrian loadings.

EnviroHoard™ is the UK's first net-zero verified hoarding system, crafted from 100% recycled uPVC with approximately 70% lower embodied carbon than traditional plywood hoarding. Both systems are fully reusable, modular and quick to install.

CCTV Systems: 24/7 Site Surveillance

CCTV systems are essential for construction site security, providing monitoring that both deters criminal activity and captures crucial evidence when incidents occur.

Modern CCTV technology goes beyond basic recording, offering real-time alerts, remote viewing capabilities and AI-powered detection systems that reduce false alarms while ensuring every corner of your site is protected.

Panthera Group's SiteProtector™ range delivers scalable, customisable CCTV solutions. From the cost-effective SiteProtector™ Alert to the advanced SiteProtector Pro™ with live video streaming and two-way audio, our systems utilise cutting-edge technology for crystal-clear images and audio.

Access Control: Managing Who Enters Your Site

Access control systems ensure only authorised personnel can enter your construction site, preventing trespassing while providing valuable data on attendance and site activity.

Panthera Group's access control solutions combine physical turnstile barriers with sophisticated software systems for complete site management. Our full or half-height turnstiles integrate with advanced technologies including facial recognition and biometric systems, providing secure, touchless identification.

Whether you need standalone turnstiles or comprehensive integrated solutions, our flexible systems adapt to sites of any size.

FAQs

Got a Question About How to Secure A Construction Site?

What are the biggest security threats to construction sites?

The main security threats include theft of equipment and materials, vandalism, unauthorised access by trespassers, and arson. Construction sites are particularly vulnerable due to high-value assets, multiple access points and often remote locations with limited supervision outside working hours.

What is the most effective type of construction site security?

The most effective approach combines multiple security layers including perimeter fencing or hoarding, CCTV surveillance, access control systems and, where necessary, security personnel. No single solution provides complete protection—integrated systems work together to deter, detect and respond to security threats.

Can sustainable hoarding withstand UK weather conditions?

Yes. EnviroHoard™ complies with Temporary Works Forum guidance and is designed to meet all UK wind zones. The system is engineered to permanent fence standards and uses low-carbon EnviroBlok foundations for stability. uPVC panels are weather-resistant and require no maintenance, even in harsh conditions.

Do I need security on a small construction site?

Yes. Even small sites contain valuable equipment, materials and tools that are attractive to thieves. Small sites are often perceived as easier targets with less security, making them particularly vulnerable. Scalable solutions like mobile CCTV units and temporary fencing can provide cost-effective protection for smaller projects.

How can I prevent unauthorised entry to my construction site?

Preventing unauthorised entry requires multiple access control measures. Start by securing all entry points with lockable gates, installing turnstile systems that only allow authorised individuals on-site, and using video cameras to monitor access 24/7. Perimeter security should eliminate gaps where unauthorised individuals might enter, and proper lighting deters attempts at unauthorised access outside work hours.

What security measures should every construction site have?

Essential security measures include perimeter security with robust fencing or hoarding, surveillance systems with security cameras, access control measures at all entry points, proper lighting, and alarm systems. Construction companies should also maintain detailed records of all personnel and visitors. The best practices involve combining multiple security systems to create layered protection for valuable assets including heavy equipment, power tools and valuable materials.

We’re proud to have worked with some of the biggest names in the construction industry

Since 2015, Durkan have been successfully working with Panthera under a single supplier framework agreement, this alone is testament to their ability and commitment in supporting Durkan through its own growth plans. In this time Panthera have safely installed in the region of over 8000 metres of hoarding across our schemes. Their MD Neal James and his team have always acted professionally and regularly go over and above to support our site teams.

Durkan are committed to driving down the C02 impact of its projects, EnviroHoard™ helps us from the start of the project and now it is Net Zero Verified will only further support our sustainability targets. I look forward to working with them in the future and would recommend their services to other contractors.

Dean Martin

Construction Director, Durkan Ltd

Sisk have been using Panthera across its various Wembley Park regeneration schemes since 2011 and since 2018 a national framework has been in place, during this time they have safely and professionally designed and installed a range of hoarding systems to suit the projects exacting requirements. In line with our own company sustainability strategy, we have been using their sustainable EnviroHoard™ system and have been impressed by its flexibility and in particular its sustainable attributes including its climate positive benefits, Tree Planting and Carbon Offsetting. I have always found them to be an easy and collaborative subcontractor to work with and would have no hesitation in recommending their services.

Panthera are a Tier 1 Subcontractor to Lovell, who deliver in terms of H&S, quality of workmanship and have a pro-active attitude on site. In terms of commercial approach, Panthera are non-contractual and their quotations and valuations are of a very good quality. A major benefit of Panthera is that they can undertake the Site Hoarding, Temporary Electrics & Plumbing and CCTV Security on our project, these are procured under a single contract. Operationally they deliver these packages using their in-house teams and coordinate all packages saving our site teams having to coordinate multiple trades.

Supply Chain Manager, Lovell

EnviroHoard™ not only helps us to meet our ambitious environmental targets, it also has real practical benefits. The panels needed to sit on top of a retaining wall with a 4m drop on one side. As EnviroHoard™ is installed from the rear, it eliminated the need for a partial road closure and the hiring of aerial platforms (MEWPS) which saved traffic disruption and cost and a further benefit was that the works did not have to take place at night.

The hoarding has a clean, professional looking appearance and does not need any on-going decorating maintenance and can be easily dismantled and reinstalled across the project with no loss in its visual appearance or structural integrity.

Matthew Davis

Project Manager, Kier

Firstly, the hoarding system we chose needed to be able to last for the entire project; this is because we made a conscious decision early on that a key driver across the scheme was to look for environmentally friendly alternatives. The EnviroHoard™ solution enabled us to meet that requirement perfectly.

We had been testing the product on simulated sites, but the opportunity to install in a real situation was ideal and has reaffirmed the benefits of the system. When coupled with the benefits of using a closed loop recycled solution that eliminates the use of trees, we believe EnviroHoard™ is the way forward for site hoarding solutions.
